Copyright Law in Pakistan

Copyright protects original creative and intellectual works, writing, music, art, films, software, and more, giving their creators the exclusive right to use, reproduce, and exploit them. For authors, artists, publishers, software houses, and content businesses, copyright is the legal foundation of their livelihood and value. Global Law Company advises creators, businesses, and rights holders across Pakistan on copyright registration, protection, licensing, and enforcement under the Copyright Ordinance 1962.
In a digital age where works can be copied and shared instantly, copyright protection matters more than ever. We help creators and businesses establish their rights clearly, exploit them through licensing, and enforce them against infringement.
The copyright framework in Pakistan
Copyright in Pakistan is governed by the Copyright Ordinance 1962 and the rules made under it, administered by the Copyright Office under IPO-Pakistan. The Ordinance protects original literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, as well as cinematographic works, sound recordings, and, importantly for the technology sector, computer software, which is protected as a literary work. Copyright arises automatically on the creation of an original work, but registration provides important evidentiary advantages, creating a public record of the claim that is valuable in enforcement. The Ordinance defines the rights of the owner, the term of protection, permitted uses, and the civil and criminal remedies for infringement, and Pakistan's framework reflects its international copyright obligations.
Registration and establishing rights
Although copyright exists without registration, registering a work with the Copyright Office provides strong evidence of ownership and the date of creation, which is invaluable if the work is later copied or disputed. We advise creators and businesses on registering their works, prepare and file the applications, and manage the registration process. We also advise on establishing and documenting ownership, particularly important where works are created by employees or commissioned from contractors, since the question of who owns the copyright in commissioned and employee-created works is a frequent source of dispute that proper documentation prevents.
Licensing, assignment, and exploitation
Copyright is valuable because it can be exploited, licensed, assigned, and commercialised. We draft and negotiate the agreements through which copyright is exploited: licensing agreements (exclusive and non-exclusive), assignments of copyright, publishing and distribution agreements, software licensing and development agreements, and content and media agreements. For each, we ensure that the scope of the rights granted, the territory, the term, the royalties, and the reservation of rights are clear and protective. Well-drafted copyright agreements let creators and businesses monetise their works while retaining the rights they intend to keep.
Enforcement and infringement
Copyright is only as valuable as the owner's ability to stop others from exploiting the work without permission. We act against copyright infringement, unauthorised copying, distribution, public performance, and piracy, including software and digital piracy, through cease-and-desist notices, civil suits seeking injunctions and damages, and the criminal remedies the Ordinance provides against piracy. We also defend businesses and individuals accused of infringement. Because copyright disputes turn on originality, ownership, and the substance of the alleged copying, we build enforcement and defence strategies around these elements.
Software, digital, and online copyright
The protection of software and digital content raises particular issues, and these are increasingly central to copyright practice. We advise software houses and technology businesses on protecting their code and products as copyright works, on ensuring ownership of software created by employees and contractors, and on licensing their software. We also advise content businesses and creators on protecting and enforcing copyright online, on dealing with digital piracy and unauthorised use, and on the copyright dimensions of websites, apps, and digital platforms. As more works move online, protecting digital copyright is a growing part of how we serve creators and technology clients.
